Lines and angles have many applications in our daily lives. Students must be confident in measuring angles, calculating angles, and drawing angles to score maximum marks in their maths exams. However, having a strong knowledge of geometrical elements such as lines and angles can also help students understand the real world. We can observe many things around us which involve the use of lines and angles. Line is an element of design and an essential part of many forms of art. Also, we may notice different types of lines such as parallel lines, perpendicular lines, intersecting lines, concurrent lines, etc. Similarly, various types of angles can also be observed. For example, acute angles, right angles, obtuse angles, reflex angles, etc.

As we know, in the construction field, angles address the distinction of whether a constructed building is safe or not. Architects and builders need to measure angles more precisely to create an upright structure and allow rainwater to run off the building’s roof. It is necessary to check the slope of all the pillars and walls to ensure that the construction building has no slant. Furthermore, without assuring all designs are built with straight lines, construction workers cannot give us the guarantee that doors, windows and other necessary things will fit. Another application of lines and angles includes bearings. These are three-digit angles used to trace or locate ships as well as aeroplanes using radars. We can also use this concept at our home whenever we try fitting certain household objects or furniture, for example, sofas, chairs, and so on. We need angles when we do not want to purchase a chair or sofa and recognise it cannot go around the wall. Furthermore, to ensure that doors do not touch or hit objects and walls hard, we need to apply a special type of angle called loci.
We can apply a branch of mathematics called trigonometry to determine how tall the buildings are around us. Here, we need to measure how far we are from the building base and calculate the angle we have to look up from the ground to point out the building’s top. In this case, we have to treat the objects which form the base or height as the line segment for precise outputs. We can use this type of data to determine the height of big constructions such as the Eiffel Tower. All these things require a basic knowledge of lines in geometry as well as angles.
